SUNNY | FIT | SEA, SAND & WINE

For me, South Africa will forever be associated with hot, sunny days in the middle of January. While friends and family back in the US were slogging through the northeast winter, we were reading on the beach or picnicking in between rows of vines. We spent over a month in Cape Town, a week in Mossel Bay and a long weekend on safari in Kruger National Park. South Africa now holds a special place in our hearts for a host of reasons.

Cape Town & Wine Regions

What an incredible city this is. If not for the relatively high crime rate and the feeling of unease one gets while walking around at night (not to mention an ongoing water shortage), this would be the perfect place to spend half the year. We found a great apartment near De Waterkant, joined Motley Crew Crossfit, and spent many days on Cape Town’s beautiful beaches and in the vineyards of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek (wine tram anyone?). We went from never having heard of Pinotage just prior to arriving to counting this fantastic grape as one of our all time favorites. In Bo Cap, we did an African-themed cooking class with Faeeza, who was featured on an episode of Somebody Feed Phil.

Kruger National Park

In Kruger, we stayed at Senalala Safari Camp, which I cannot recommend more highly. With a small number of rooms, expert guides and a family atmosphere, we had one of the most wonderful trips of our life here. Seeing the animals in their natural habitat was incredible and being able to relax in the middle of the day after early morning game drives was part of the experience. Enjoying a beer or glass of wine by the river or the pool, surrounded by nothing but the bush, made for an unforgettable experience. We can’t wait to go back.
