HISTORY | OCEAN | SEAFOOD

Our summer tour of Europe continued in Croatia, which was full of blue-green waters, endless plates of fresh caught fish and hot sunny days. While their language is basically unintelligible, nearly everyone speaks at least some English. We spent time in several of the most tourist-heavy cities: Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik, but also several weeks in a tiny town on the island of Hvar called Milna. We had an apartment right on the water with our own dock with a ladder leading right into the Adriatic. We rented a car and explored many areas of the island, from a small farm where we had an amazing lunch to hidden beaches accessible only by hiking down cliffs to incredibly well-preserved towns that were abandoned decades earlier. In Split and Dubrovnik we did walking tours which covered many of the locations for Game of Thrones and gawked at the ancient buildings alongside the throngs of tourists arriving by ferries and cruise ships every day. If you don’t like the heat, I would avoid it in the summer but otherwise Croatia is a Mediterranean gem that should be on every beach/ocean-lover’s list of places to visit in Europe.
